The second, or bloat, stage of decomposition. Bloating of the abdomen occurs due to gases being produced by resident flora of the gastrointestinal tract. They are able to proliferate because the immune system is no longer able to control their rapid rate of growth. This leads to a more pronounced odor and it is at this stage that marbling of the skin can be seen. By the end of the bloat stage, there will be slippage of the skin, especially on the extremities. The bloat stage ends when the bacteria and insects have perforated the abdominal cavity, allowing the release of the built up gases. The next stage is called active decomposition. [x]
